Having necessary equipment when installing Christmas lights is crucial for enhancing productivity, reducing the risk of accidents, and upholding professional standards, leading to a successful and well-executed project. Having the proper tools and equipment allows us to perform the tasks more efficiently and effectively- which saves time, unnecessary effort, and overall productivity. Roof work involves working with heights, which increase the possibility of risks. Using the appropriate equipment will also help demonstrate professionalism and confidence for your clients that the job will be completed with the highest level of expertise and safety. Outlined below are 3 levels of equipment you can purchase. The first set of items are necessary for beginning the installation of Christmas lights. The other two sets of items are add-ons that will make your time on the job easier.
Level 1
Truck/trailer + Ladder rack w/ ratchet straps
You will most likely need a way of transporting your supplies, including the ladders. Depending on the size of the installations, you can either use a truck or trailer.
Ladders + Ladder Stabilizer
Depending on the height of the home/area you are working on, a sturdy ladder is necessary to reach and hang lights securely in elevated positions. We recommend starting out with a 30ft-40ft ladder as well as a 6ft A-frame ladder. These two ladders will give you adequate height to reach roofs, as well as lower areas such as trees. If your budget allows, you can look at the ad-on options which will make the process a bit easier. For all of your ladders, make sure you have a good ladder stabilizer. This will prevent damage to gutters, help stabilization, and help you get above the gutter a lot easier.
Gloves
Gloves are essential to protect your hands, and provide improved grip. Look for gloves that you can easily use your tools with and have good insulation since you will be working in winter weather.
Pliers and Wire cutter
We recommend multi-functional wire cutters so you can easily cut, strip, and bend wires.
Utility Pouch
A utility pouch or utility belt will allow you to work, handsfree, while having full access to your tools. This is you can store your wire cutters, vampire plugs, and extra clips.
Harness
A harness is used in cases where you can not reach it with a ladder, the pitch is too steep, or you feel like a safety measure is needed. We recommend getting outside training or guidance before using a harness.
Pitch Hoppers
The Pitch Hopper provides a level working surface on any pitch up to a 12/12. The steeper pitched side allows for a perfectly flat surface on a 12/12, but can be used on any pitch all the way down to a 9/12. We recommend having a minimum of 2 per person.
Cougar Paws
Boots designed to help you with traction while working on a roof.
Light Take Down and Storage System
We recommend using totes to keep everything organized and easy to access while installing and taking down the lights. They can also be repurposed to store the lights for future seasons.
Level 2 Add-on
Leg Leveler
Allows you to utilize a ladder on an uneven surface. For example, if you are on a hill, the leg leveler will make the ladder level, instead of being tilted.
Adjustable A-frame Ladder
This ladder will add a level of ease to working with trees and lower areas. Some a-frames have a built in leveler and stabilizer which can double it’s utility.
Rope or Paracord
If we have more than one team member, they can pull things up from the ground and make it easier for you to work from the ladder.
Pants for Roof
Wearing pants that are approved for the roof are a nice add-on, since they are slip-resistant and help keep you cool while working.
Tinted Safety Glasses
Provides a layer of eye protection while working.
Light Take Down System
If your budget allows, you can use reels or trash cans that can hold larger capacities to make it easier while on the job.
Level 3 Add-on
15ft - 20ft ladder
Easier to use and move around with when working on lower levels
The GOAT Roofing Tool
Makes it easier to climb on roofs, and move around once you are on the roof.
Multimeter
Tests electrical currents, easily see it outlets work.
Walkie Talkies
Saves time because you can communicate with your team members from the ground.
